The UltraTech 1011 P2 with drain is the best choice for most two-drum storage: a 66 gallon sump, a 3,000 lb load rating, and a drain for emptying collected liquid, at $482.56 on Amazon. The 1000 P4 holds four drums at a 6,000 lb rating, and the 1341 P4 Flexible is the low-profile option with a PVC sump. Size the sump to your largest drum before you size it to your budget.

Contain a leaking drum with a pallet sized to your inventory

  • The 1011 P2 with drain lists a 66 gallon sump and 3,000 lb capacity for $482.56.
  • The 1000 P4 lists a 66 gallon sump and 6,000 lb capacity across four drums for $655.74.
  • The 1341 P4 Flexible stands 7 inches high with a 24 mil PVC sump and 2,400 lb capacity for $458.33.
  • Under 40 CFR 264.175, containment must hold 10% of total container volume or the volume of the largest container, whichever is greater.
  • A 66 gallon sump holds one full 55 gallon drum with 11 gallons to spare.

Keep a leaking drum out of the drain and off your report

A spill containment pallet is a polyethylene or PVC sump under a removable grate. Drums sit on the grate, and a leak drops into the sump instead of onto the floor.

Two federal rules set the sizing. For hazardous waste container storage, 40 CFR 264.175 requires containment to hold 10% of the volume of the containers or the volume of the largest container, whichever is greater. For oil, the SPCC rule in 40 CFR 112 requires secondary containment sized to the largest container where it applies.

  • Check chemical compatibility. Polyethylene resists most acids and corrosives; confirm it for your contents.
  • Inspect the sump and remove collected liquid promptly. A full sump holds nothing.

Compare pallets on the four specs an inspector checks

  1. Drum count and footprint, matched to the drums you store.
  2. Sump capacity against the largest container, per 40 CFR 264.175.
  3. Uniformly distributed load rating.

Size secondary containment correctly the first time

How much containment does 40 CFR 264.175 require?

Enough to hold 10% of the volume of the containers or the volume of the largest container, whichever is greater.

Does SPCC apply to my facility?

The SPCC rule in 40 CFR 112 applies to facilities with more than 1,320 gallons of aboveground oil storage that could reach navigable waters. Containers of 55 gallons or more count toward that total.

Is a 66 gallon sump enough for a 55 gallon drum?

For one drum, yes. For four drums the 10% rule gives 22 gallons, so the largest-container rule of 55 gallons governs, and 66 gallons covers it.

Are these pallets EPA approved?

EPA does not approve products. The UltraTech 1011 and 1000 listings state they meet SPCC and 40 CFR 264.175.

Can I store incompatible chemicals on one pallet?

No. A leak from one drum could react with another in the shared sump. Separate incompatible materials.

What does the drain do?

It lets you empty collected liquid from the sump without lifting drums off the grate.

Size the sump to your largest drum

Count the drums at each storage point, apply the larger of 10% of total volume or the largest container, and choose a pallet with a sump at least that large. For two drums in active use, start with the UltraTech 1011 P2 with drain.
