HAZWOPER 40 hour certification is the initial training 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(3)(i) requires for general site workers at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. An online course covers the 40 classroom hours; your employer still provides three days of field experience under a trained, experienced supervisor.
After the initial course, each worker needs an 8-hour refresher every year. Compare all HAZWOPER courses, including the 24-hour option.

Who Needs HAZWOPER 40 Hour
General site workers who handle hazardous substances, operate equipment, or face potential exposure above permissible limits at cleanup and remediation sites. Workers on site only occasionally for a limited task, or in areas monitored below exposure limits, may qualify for the 24-hour course instead.
Supervisors and managers responsible for site operations need the 40 hours plus eight additional hours of specialized training under 1910.120(e)(4).
