How to Become a Forklift Trainer at Your Company
A new hire starts Monday, two operators are due for their three-year evaluation, and someone clipped a rack upright last week. Each of those needs a trainer. If the trainer is a consultant who comes out twice a year, the operator waits or works untrained.
Most warehouses fix this by making one supervisor or lead operator the forklift trainer.
OSHA does not require a forklift trainer certification
Under 1910.178(l)(2)(iii), all operator training and evaluation must be done by people with the knowledge, training, and experience to train operators and evaluate their competence. OSHA does not name a trainer card or license.
A train the trainer course documents the training part; years on the truck supply the experience part. You need both, and you should be able to show both if an inspector asks.
Choose the operator your crew already listens to
Pick someone who runs every truck type in your building well, knows the dock and the racking, and has the authority to take keys away after a failed evaluation. A trainer who cannot pull an operator off a truck is not running your program.
How long it takes to become a forklift trainer
The OSHA Forklift Train The Trainer course from Q Safety Academy lists 16 hours of course time with 36 months of access. On October 16, 2026, it was listed at $399.
After the course, plan a few days for your trainer to write the site-specific part: your truck types, attachments, travel routes, and pedestrian rules.
What your trainer does after the course
Every new operator needs formal instruction, practical training, and an evaluation in your workplace. Your trainer delivers all three and signs the certification under 1910.178(l)(6): operator name, training date, evaluation date, and trainer name.
The trainer also handles the three-year evaluations and the refresher training due after an accident, a near miss, unsafe operation, or a change in truck type or workplace conditions.
Does a forklift trainer certification expire?
The standard sets no expiration for the trainer. Many employers refresh the trainer on the same three-year cycle as operators, and the 36 months of course access lets your trainer review before each class.
Compare the forklift train the trainer certification with what you spend on an outside trainer each year.
